ADDRESSING ORTHODONTIC PROBLEMS

Orthodontist addresses the irregularities in teeth and jaw alignment. Children, teenagers and adults alike can greatly benefit from addressing the below issues to help improve their quality of life and function of their bite. If possible, these common orthodontic problems in children should be addressed as quickly as possible. This can help avoid speech impairment, jaw pain, chewing issues and even more costly dental work down the road

UNDERBITE

An underbite is when the lower jaw extends or protrudes forward, causing the lower front teeth to sit in front of the upper teeth.

OVERBITE

Condition in which the upper front teeth extend out over the lower front teeth. This can cause the lower front teeth to bite into the roof of the mouth.

CROSSBITE

When one or more of the upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth instead of the outside. This may cause tooth stratification and misaligned jaw.

SPACING

Spacing or gaps, also known as diastema, are a common dental issue. Spacing may be due to varying reasons. Some issues include small or undersized teeth in comparison to the jaw bone, missing teeth or an oversized labial frenum. Reasons to fix can be simply cosmetic or necessary for proper bite alignment.

OPENBITE

The upper and lower front teeth do not overlap when the back teeth are clenched. Openbite may be caused by a number of unwanted habits, such as tongue thrusting and thumb sucking. Chewing and speech are negatively affected.

UPPER FRONT TEETH PROTRUSION

Upper teeth protrude or extend too far forward and/or the lower teeth do not extend far enough. The appearance and function of teeth are impacted by this type of bite. Upper front teeth are also more vulnerable to injury.

DENTAL MIDLINES NOT MATCHED

When the line between the two upper front teeth and the two lower front teeth don’t line up, the back bite is often off causing major issues the function of the jaw and teeth.

CHILDREN’S ORTHODONTIC CONSULT

BDC recommend children have an orthodontic exam by age seven

BENEFITS OF EARLY ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT

By starting treatment early, we are able to recognize potential problems early and correct them before they develop into more serious issues. Early diagnosis and treatment can guide the jaw and erupting teeth into favorable positions. In your child’s initial orthodontic exam, we will address any dental issues, WE currently sees or areas that will be potential issues down the road. Overall, early treatment can simplify later treatment and often save you time and money. If early treatment is indicated, our team will lay out a personalized treatment plan that our orthodontist will discussed with you.

ADDITIONAL EARLY TREATMENT BENEFITS:

  • Create facial symmetry
  • Reduce risk of possible tooth extractions
  • Reduce risk of trauma to protruding teeth
  • Reduction in orthodontic treatment time later on

WHAT IF MY CHILD ISN’T A CANDIDATE FOR ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT AT THIS TIME?

There are many cases where we may see no issues at all or potential issues that are best left to treat in the teen years. Certain types of orthodontic treatment are more efficiently taken care of once all permanent teeth have erupted. Each child is different and our orthodontist approaches each child’s orthodontic work on an individual basis. If we see future orthodontic work is likely, orthodontist will work closely with the parents and pediatric dentist to monitor the child’s developing teeth.

BRACES FOR ALL AGES

BDC offers a full range of braces for our patients. Our experienced orthodontist, will layout a customized treatment plan that carefully selects the best braces type for you or your child’s orthodontic needs and lifestyle. We provide braces for adults and children.

TRADITIONAL METAL BRACES

When most people think of braces they think of traditional metal braces. Traditional braces have progressed a lot over the years and they are now lighter, more attractive and less bulky than they use to be. Metal braces are made of high-grade stainless steel that have tiny brackets cemented to each tooth. A thin wire (archwire) then runs along each bracket, linking them together. A tiny elastic band, also called a ligature, is then what connects this thin wire to the brackets. The archwire applies pressure to the teeth and moves them slowly into proper positioning.

LINGUAL BRACES

Lingual braces are metal braces placed behind the teeth instead of in front like traditional braces and clear braces. If treatment allows, lingual braces are another great cosmetic alternative for adults and teenagers that don’t want to show they have braces. Unlike traditional braces, they are custom made. An impression of your teeth will be taken that is then sent to a lab where your custom brackets are made. Due to the time, labor and customization involved in lingual braces, they may be more costly and take a bit longer to reach treatment completion. If it allows you to keep your confidence while having your teeth fixed, well worth the extra.

CERAMIC OR CLEAR BRACES

Ceramic or clear braces are a very popular choice for adults needing braces due to their cosmetic appeal. They are less visible than traditional metal braces. The difference between ceramic braces compared to traditional braces is the brackets are made out of a transparent ceramic material instead of metal. The drawback of clear braces for adults, teenagers or children is the elastic bands or ligatures can discolor in-between orthodontic visits.

SELF-LIGATING BRACES

These types of braces are gaining popularity for multiple reasons but it seems to be mostly due to less chair time and fewer orthodontist visits. Self-ligating braces are placed like traditional metal braces with the exception of the ligature (elastic band). Instead of the ligature or elastic band a clip is used to help the archwire continuously apply pressure and move teeth into alignment. This clip helps reduce the pressure placed on each tooth and allows for less adjustments to be needed by your orthodontist. Self-ligating braces can be metal or ceramic.

INVISALIGN®

Invislaign involves a set of multiple clear aligners that require no metal or wires. They are removable, easy to clean and are custom made for you. Our orthodontist will take an impression that is then sent to Invisalign where they will custom make your trays. The amount of aligners needed depends on the individual. You will wear each set of aligners for two weeks. Each time a new set is put in, they adjust your teeth closer and closer to the desired alignment. INVISALIGN TREATED CONDITIONS

INVISALIGN TREATMENT PROCESS

You will first come in for your orthodontic or Invisalign consultation. You will be able to discuss your goals with our dentist and from there we will see if you are a candidate for Invisalign. If you are a candidate and would like to proceed we will then move forward with x-rays and set out an individualized treatment plan.

Using your treatment plan we will discuss how long it should take for your teeth to shift into proper alignment. The amount of trays each patient receives and duration of treatment is completely dependent on the issue at hand. For each set of clear aligners you will wear them for two weeks at 22 hours a day before moving onto the next set.

You will visit our dental office every six weeks to make sure everything is moving into alignment properly.
